What is compounding and what are the benefits?

Pharmaceutical compounding is great because it means that a doctor can
prescribe a medication specifically tailored for the patient and the disease.

And yes, we do compounding here at Golden Hills Pharmacy. Only, we are considered a non-sterile compounding pharmacy, meaning we can offer compounded medications in the form of capsules, suspensions and topical creams. We do not do any compound medications that go into the eyes or that are injectable - those are only available through sterile compounding pharmacies.

A few examples of medications we commonly compound here at Golden Hills are topical creams for hormone therapy and thyroid disease therapy. We also compound medications for animals. For instance, let's say you have 5-pound cat that needs steroid therapy or thyroid disease medication. It's very difficult to cut a tablet into 8 pieces, so we can take the medication and put it into a tuna-flavored suspension. Or, we can create a transdermal cream that you can rub inside the cat's ears. (Cats tend to be very finicky when it comes to medication.)

Compounding is exciting because it means the animal gets the medication it needs, and it's easier on the owner to give it to them. We frequently compound antibiotics for cats and dogs that we put into a chicken-flavored suspension, which you can either mix into food or give directly to them. For horses, we can compound medications into an apple-flavored oral paste.

Most insurance companies do not cover compounded medications but you will find that our prices are very competitive with other compounding facilities. Give us a call today to inquire!
